Melissa J. Walsh, PhD
Assistant Professor of Instruction
Associate Chair of Biology
Research Areas: Species distribution modeling, aquatic ecology, science education
My research focuses on using novel modeling techniques to answer questions of fundamental importance regarding the distribution of species and the impact of climate change, invasive species, and disturbance. I am also interested in how students learn and in developing contemporary and high impact curricula to prepare today's students for successful careers in science and health professions. As an administrator, I am motivated by ensuring all students have access to high quality courses and research opportunities and that faculty are supported in their teaching. Using data-driven targeting of high risk students and courses with traditionally high failure rates ("gateway courses") allows me to make focused curricular enhancements that make the most efficient use of department resources while be most impactful.
